About Kirk Mahoney
Kirk Mahoney is a purpose-driven, disciplined, problem-solving, early-rising, persistent, entrepreneurial, fitness-seeking, and optimistic technology strategist, software developer, and blogger. Simply put, Kirk believes that everyone has the potential to communicate better.
Kirk’s fascination with better communication began at age 12, when he took a photography course at a local science museum. After graduating almost a year early from high school, Kirk immediately attended a local community college and earned an A.A.S. in instructional media technology in a year and a half. He then became a medical photographer at a county hospital, where he became fascinated with medical imaging.
That fascination eventually led him back to college, where he saw the power of statistics to describe and predict behavior — human or otherwise — as almost magical.
Several degrees later (you could rightly accuse him of being an over-achiever), Kirk earned his Ph.D. in biomathematics from UCLA School of Medicine, where he learned how to write (and re-write!) scholarly papers, to summarize complex experiments in single posters, to teach, tutor, and consult with others, to speak before large audiences, and to create dog-and-pony shows — including one that helped his positron emission tomography (PET) lab to take over a $13 million institute.
Kirk’s whole working life has been about communication — first as a photographer, then as a multimedia producer, then statistical consultant, then graduate researcher in nuclear medical imaging, and so on. Except for the early photography and A/V work, all of his work has depended on computer technology — from mainframes to minicomputers to Macs and PCs, using lots of operating systems and developing in more than twenty-five computer languages. Throw in his Microsoft certifications, and you’d probably say that he’s a geek.
Kirk has a uniquely diverse but deep background interconnected by a drive to improve communication, no matter its form:
