{"id":102,"date":"2008-01-07T12:00:53","date_gmt":"2008-01-07T18:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/imply-vs-infer\/"},"modified":"2008-01-07T12:01:18","modified_gmt":"2008-01-07T18:01:18","slug":"imply-vs-infer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2008\/01\/imply-vs-infer\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Imply&#8221; vs. &#8220;Infer&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I often hear &#8220;infer&#8221; when people mean &#8220;imply&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe verbs &#8220;imply&#8221; and &#8220;infer&#8221; are <em>not<\/em> synonyms!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explanation:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe primary definition of the verb &#8220;imply&#8221; is <em>convey or suggest without stating outright<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The primary definition of the verb &#8220;infer&#8221; is <em>draw conclusions that are not explicit in what is stated<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, &#8220;imply&#8221; is what the <em>speaker or writer<\/em> does, whereas &#8220;infer&#8221; is what the <em>listener or reader<\/em> does.<\/p>\n<p>Many will use &#8220;infer&#8221; when what they mean is &#8220;imply&#8221;. I believe that this is consistent with my &#8220;Devolution toward Simpler&#8221; linguistic hypothesis. The verb &#8220;infer&#8221; is simpler to say than is the verb &#8220;imply&#8221;. In particular, it&#8217;s simpler to follow the &#8220;n&#8221; sound with an &#8220;f&#8221; sound than it is to follow an &#8220;m&#8221; sound with a &#8220;pl&#8221; sound. (Try it!) Plus, it&#8217;s simpler to speak a word that ends with &#8220;er&#8221; than it is to speak a word that ends with &#8220;y&#8221; (which has to be held longer than &#8220;er&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\nUse &#8220;imply&#8221; when you&#8217;re talking about suggesting without writing (or speaking) outright.
