{"id":274,"date":"2008-06-25T12:00:42","date_gmt":"2008-06-25T18:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/blog\/2008\/06\/the-dvd-is-due-on-next-sunday\/"},"modified":"2008-10-26T12:29:41","modified_gmt":"2008-10-26T18:29:41","slug":"the-dvd-is-due-on-next-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2008\/06\/the-dvd-is-due-on-next-sunday\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The DVD is due on next Sunday.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I heard this at Blockbuster Video over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe phrase &#8220;on next Sunday&#8221; did not sound right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explanation:<\/strong><br \/>\nMy wife and I were renting a DVD at a local Blockbuster Video store last Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Blockbuster has a seven-day return policy.<\/p>\n<p>I was expecting the Blockbuster sales clerk to say one of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;The DVD is due on Sunday, June 29.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The DVD is due next Sunday.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So when I heard her say, &#8220;The DVD is due on next Sunday,&#8221; I was taken aback and began to wonder why &#8220;on next Sunday&#8221; was incorrect.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what I realized:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The clerk wanted to say <em>when<\/em> the DVD was due.<\/li>\n<li>Saying <em>when<\/em> is equivalent to modifying the verb &#8220;due&#8221; with an adverb or adverbial phrase.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Sunday&#8221; is a noun.<\/li>\n<li>One can combine the preposition &#8220;on&#8221; with the noun &#8220;Sunday&#8221; to get an adverbial phrase that says <em>when<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>The phrase &#8220;next Sunday&#8221; is already an adverbial phrase because it says <em>when<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Therefore, it is a mistake to combine the preposition &#8220;on&#8221; with the adverbial phrase &#8220;next Sunday&#8221; in an attempt to get an adverbial phrase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;The DVD is due next Sunday.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I heard this at Blockbuster Video over the weekend.
