{"id":287,"date":"2008-07-08T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2008-07-08T18:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/entitled-vs-titled\/"},"modified":"2011-05-31T18:25:48","modified_gmt":"2011-06-01T00:25:48","slug":"entitled-vs-titled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2008\/07\/entitled-vs-titled\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Entitled&#8221; vs. &#8220;Titled&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I often hear people use one of these words as a substitute for the other word.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe words &#8220;entitled&#8221; and &#8220;titled&#8221; are <em>not<\/em> synonyms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explanation:<\/strong><br \/>\nOne definition of the transitive verb &#8220;title&#8221; is <em>to call by a name<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>An example of proper use of this verb is &#8220;He titled his autobiography &#8216;Jim&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One definition of the verb &#8220;entitle&#8221; is <em>to give (a thing or person) a claim to something<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>An example of proper use of this first definition of &#8220;entitle&#8221; is &#8220;American children are entitled to a tax-funded education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another definition of the verb &#8220;entitle&#8221; is <em>to confer an honorary title on (someone)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>An example of proper use of this second definition of &#8220;entitle&#8221; is &#8220;The king entitled him Sir Muckety-Muck at the polo match.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A third definition of the verb &#8220;entitle&#8221; is <em>to give a title to something<\/em>, but it does <em>not<\/em> refer to the title itself.<\/p>\n<p>So it is <em>incorrect<\/em> to say or write &#8220;He entitled the book &#8216;Babe Ruth&#8217;.&#8221;, but it is <em>correct<\/em> to say or write &#8220;He entitled the book before he wrote it. It is titled &#8216;Babe Ruth&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In other words, one should not use &#8220;entitled&#8221; before the name of a movie, rock concert, book, athletic competition, painting, etc., but one may use &#8220;titled&#8221; before the name of any of these.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\nUse &#8220;titled&#8221; but never &#8220;entitled&#8221; before the name of an event or creation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I often hear people use one of these words as a substitute for the other word.
