{"id":291,"date":"2008-07-12T12:00:19","date_gmt":"2008-07-12T18:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/he-has-ran-five-miles\/"},"modified":"2011-05-31T18:27:52","modified_gmt":"2011-06-01T00:27:52","slug":"he-has-ran-five-miles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2008\/07\/he-has-ran-five-miles\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;He has ran five miles.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I frequently hear sentences constructed in this way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong><br \/>\nA past-tense verb appears where the verb&#8217;s past participle is required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explanation:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe auxiliary verb &#8220;has&#8221; must be combined with a past participle to form a perfect tense.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He has <em>eaten<\/em> the piece of pie.<\/li>\n<li>He has <em>shaved<\/em> five minutes off his marathon time.<\/li>\n<li>He has <em>cut<\/em> his finger.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first example uses &#8220;eaten&#8221; &#8212; the past participle of &#8220;eat&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The second example uses &#8220;shaved&#8221; &#8212; the past participle of &#8220;shave&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The third example uses &#8220;cut&#8221; &#8212; the past participle of &#8220;cut&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The past participle of &#8220;run&#8221; is &#8220;run&#8221;, <em>not<\/em> &#8220;ran&#8221;, which is the past tense of &#8220;run&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>For fun, I searched Google for each of the following combinations (with the quotation marks) and got about the indicated numbers of matches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;has run&#8221; &#8212; 6,780,000 matches<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;has ran&#8221; &#8212; 203,000 matches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This tells me that Web authors favor &#8220;has run&#8221; over &#8220;has ran&#8221; by a 33.4:1, which is good but not great.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;He has run five miles.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I frequently hear sentences constructed in this way.
