{"id":306,"date":"2008-07-27T12:00:51","date_gmt":"2008-07-27T18:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/avenge-vs-revenge\/"},"modified":"2011-05-31T18:31:59","modified_gmt":"2011-06-01T00:31:59","slug":"avenge-vs-revenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2008\/07\/avenge-vs-revenge\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Avenge&#8221; vs. &#8220;Revenge&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I heard both of these words yesterday, and it made me wonder about the difference between &#8220;avenge&#8221; and &#8220;revenge&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong><br \/>\nAs transitive verbs, these two words are not quite synonyms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explanation:<\/strong><br \/>\nSome argue that the word &#8220;revenge&#8221; is never a verb.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you accept that the word &#8220;revenge&#8221; can be a verb, then you should know the difference between &#8220;revenge&#8221; as a transitive verb and &#8220;avenge&#8221; as a transitive verb.<\/p>\n<p>Lexicographers see motivation as the key distinction between the transitive verbs &#8220;avenge&#8221; and &#8220;revenge&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The transitive verb &#8220;avenge&#8221; essentially means <em>to take vengeance on behalf of<\/em>, and its motivation relates to administration of appropriate punishment for an immoral or criminal act.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The district attorney avenged the vagabond&#8217;s murder.&#8221; is an example of widely accepted use of the transitive verb &#8220;avenge&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The transitive verb &#8220;revenge&#8221; essentially means <em>to exact punishment for a wrong on behalf of, especially in a vindictive or resentful spirit<\/em>, its motivation relates to true hatred, and it is stronger than the verb &#8220;avenge&#8221; at stressing retaliation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He revenged his brother&#8217;s murder.&#8221; is an example of widely accepted use of the transitive verb &#8220;revenge&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\nUse the transitive verb &#8220;avenge&#8221; with justice as the motivation, and use the transitive verb &#8220;revenge&#8221; with retaliatory hatred as the motivation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I heard both of these words yesterday, and it made me wonder about the difference between &#8220;avenge&#8221; and &#8220;revenge&#8221;.
