The verb “get” is amazingly diverse in its definitions.<\/p>\n
“You can get a ticket.” means “You can receive<\/em> a ticket.”<\/p>\n “You get to go.” means “You are allowed<\/em> to go.”<\/p>\n “You get up at 8 o’clock?” means “You wake<\/em> up at 8 o’clock?”<\/p>\n “Do you get it?” means “Do you understand<\/em> it?”<\/p>\n “Get out of my way!” means “Move<\/em> out of my way!”<\/p>\n “Could you get that for me?” means “Could you procure and bring<\/em> that for me?”<\/p>\n “When do you get your hair cut?” means “When do you cause<\/em> your hair to become<\/em> cut?”<\/p>\n “Get her before she reaches the prison fence!” means “Seize<\/em> her before she reaches the prison fence!”<\/p>\n “When do you get home?” means “When do you arrive<\/em> home?”<\/p>\n And these are only some<\/em> of the definitions of the verb “get”!<\/p>\n I believe that this diversity is consistent with my “Devolution toward Simpler” linguistic hypothesis.
