{"id":437,"date":"2008-12-04T12:00:52","date_gmt":"2008-12-04T18:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/blog\/2008\/12\/i-feel-bad-vs-i-feel-badly\/"},"modified":"2011-05-31T19:46:29","modified_gmt":"2011-06-01T01:46:29","slug":"i-feel-bad-vs-i-feel-badly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2008\/12\/i-feel-bad-vs-i-feel-badly\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;I feel bad.&#8221; vs. &#8220;I feel badly.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I thought again about these two forms after hearing someone claim that only one of these was correct.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe verb &#8220;feel&#8221; can take an adjective or an adverb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explanation:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe verb &#8220;feel&#8221; is a loaded verb in that it relates to a state of health or emotion as well as to the sense of touch.<\/p>\n<p>The verb &#8220;feel&#8221; can be used as a linking verb, which is called a <a target=\"_copula\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linking_verb\">&#8220;copula&#8221;<\/a> in linguistics.<\/p>\n<p>A linking verb ties the subject of a sentence with the predicate of the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>As described <a target=\"_chomp\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chompchomp.com\/terms\/linkingverb.htm\">elsewhere<\/a>, the verbs &#8220;be&#8221;, &#8220;become&#8221;, and &#8220;seem&#8221; are called <em>true<\/em> linking verbs because they can be nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>Examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;I am rich!&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;You became wealthy.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;They seem nice.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In contrast, each of the following verbs can act as an <em>action<\/em> verb or as a <em>linking<\/em> verb:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;appear&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;feel&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;grow&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;look&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;prove&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;remain&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;smell&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;sound&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;taste&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;turn&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are examples of these verbs used as <em>action<\/em> verbs, each of which can be modified by one or more adverbs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;She <em>effortlessly appeared<\/em> from the bushes.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;He <em>barely feels<\/em> that tack in the carpet.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Mary <em>often grows<\/em> hibiscus plants.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<em>Look now<\/em> at that cow crossing the road!&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Can you <em>quickly prove<\/em> this theorem?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;I can <em>remain here<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Everyone should <em>always smell<\/em> the flowers.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Paul Revere <em>urgently sounded<\/em> the alarm.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Can they <em>barely taste<\/em> the ginger in that dessert?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Please <em>slowly turn<\/em> the car to the right at the next light.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are examples of the same verbs used as <em>linking<\/em> verbs, each of which is followed by an adjective:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;She <em>appears ill<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;He <em>feels odd<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Mary <em>grows angry<\/em> when she sees her hibiscus flowers destroyed.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Darling, you <em>look marvelous<\/em>!&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Purchase of Manhattan <em>proved inexpensive<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The dishes <em>remain dirty<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;You <em>smell delightful<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;His argument <em>sounds correct<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;This dessert <em>tastes delicious<\/em>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;His face <em>turns red<\/em> when you embarrass him.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\nUse &#8220;I feel bad.&#8221; to describe the current state of your emotions or health.
