{"id":477,"date":"2009-01-12T12:00:29","date_gmt":"2009-01-12T18:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/blog\/2009\/01\/had-ran\/"},"modified":"2011-05-31T19:10:42","modified_gmt":"2011-06-01T01:10:42","slug":"had-ran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2009\/01\/had-ran\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;had ran&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I heard this the other day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe speaker used the preterite where the past participle was required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explanation:<\/strong><br \/>\nI do not remember the complete sentence, but it was something along the lines of &#8220;I had ran into him at the grocery store.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It does not matter that the speaker used &#8220;had&#8221;; using &#8220;have&#8221; instead would not have solved the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Other similar mistakes include &#8220;had gave&#8221; and &#8220;have drove&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The verb &#8220;run&#8221; has these basic forms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Run<\/strong> &#8212; present simple, as in &#8220;Can you run a marathon?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ran<\/strong> &#8212; preterite, as in &#8220;My wife ran a half-marathon yesterday.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Run<\/strong> &#8212; past participle, as in &#8220;They have run out of things to say.&#8221; or &#8220;They had run the engine for three minutes before it died.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Running<\/strong> &#8212; present continuous, as in &#8220;The engine is not running.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The frequency of this mistake &#8212; using a preterite where a past participle is required &#8212; seems to be increasing.<\/p>\n<p>For fun, I searched Google for each of the following (with the quotation marks, to avoid variations) and got about the indicated numbers of matches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;had run&#8221; &#8212; 3,360,000 matches<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;had ran&#8221; &#8212; 160,000 matches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This tells me that Web authors have used the correct &#8220;had run&#8221; versus the incorrect &#8220;had ran&#8221; by a ratio of 21.0-to-1, which is good but not great.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, I searched Google for each of the following (with the quotation marks, to avoid variations) and got about the indicated numbers of matches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;have run&#8221; &#8212; 8,710,000 matches<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;have ran&#8221; &#8212; 626,000 matches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This tells me that Web authors have used the correct &#8220;have run&#8221; versus the incorrect &#8220;have ran&#8221; by a ratio of 13.9-to-1, which is not very good, especially in light of more than half a million instances of the incorrect &#8220;have ran&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;had run&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I heard this the other day.
