{"id":532,"date":"2009-03-04T12:00:19","date_gmt":"2009-03-04T18:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/inverse-vs-converse\/"},"modified":"2011-07-29T13:55:52","modified_gmt":"2011-07-29T19:55:52","slug":"inverse-vs-converse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2009\/03\/inverse-vs-converse\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;inverse&#8221; vs. &#8220;converse&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I heard someone say &#8220;inversely&#8221; yesterday to introduce a contrary opinion to what he first stated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe adverbs &#8220;inversely&#8221; and &#8220;conversely&#8221; are <em>not<\/em> synonyms, just as the adjectives &#8220;inverse&#8221; and &#8220;converse&#8221; are <em>not<\/em> synonyms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explanation:<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen I heard someone yesterday state one opinion and then introduce an opposing opinion with the adverb &#8220;inversely&#8221;, I thought that it sounded odd.<\/p>\n<p>I was expecting him to say &#8220;conversely&#8221; instead of &#8220;inversely&#8221;, so I decided to learn more about the adjectives &#8220;inverse&#8221; and &#8220;converse&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This adjective &#8220;inverse&#8221; dates back to around 1610 from a Latin verb that means <em>to turn inside out or upside down<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So an example of valid use of the adjective &#8220;inverse&#8221; is &#8220;The inverse form of the fraction 3\/4 is the fraction 4\/3.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The adjective &#8220;converse&#8221; dates back to the second half of the 1300s from a Latin verb that means <em>to turn around<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So an example of a valid use of the adjective &#8220;converse&#8221; is &#8220;The converse perspective to &#8216;The glass is half-full.&#8217; is &#8216;The glass is half-empty.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It may help to look at the words &#8220;inverse&#8221; and &#8220;converse&#8221; when they are used as nouns in mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>Given the statement <strong>&#8220;if p, then q&#8221;<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;if not p, then not q&#8221;<\/strong> is the inverse;<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;if q, then p&#8221;<\/strong> is the converse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notice how the inverse &#8220;turns inside out&#8221; the original statement and how the converse &#8220;turns around&#8221; the original statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><br \/>\nUse the adjective &#8220;inverse&#8221; to label something that is upside down or inside out.
