{"id":544,"date":"2009-03-15T12:00:10","date_gmt":"2009-03-15T18:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/beware-the-ides-of-march\/"},"modified":"2011-05-31T10:32:16","modified_gmt":"2011-05-31T16:32:16","slug":"beware-the-ides-of-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2009\/03\/beware-the-ides-of-march\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Beware the ides of March.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I saw this morning that today was March 15, I thought of the statement &#8220;Beware the ides of March.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_Shakespeare\" href=\"http:\/\/www.enotes.com\/shakespeare-quotes\/beware-ides-march\">This statement<\/a>, which refers to the 15th of March, is from a soothsayer in Shakespeare&#8217;s play <em>Julius Caesar<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But I still wondered about the origin of the plural noun &#8220;ides&#8221;, so I looked up the word at <a target=\"_ides\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/ides\">dictionary.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And I learned a few things.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The word &#8220;ides&#8221; is from the ancient Roman calendar and dates back to approximately 1330.<\/li>\n<li>The word &#8220;ides&#8221; refers not only to the 15th of March but also to the 15th of May, July, and October.<\/li>\n<li>The word &#8220;ides&#8221; refers to the 13th of every other month in the ancient Roman calendar.<\/li>\n<li>Eight days in each month collectively are known as the ides, but only the final one (e.g., the 15th of March) gets to be called specifically the &#8220;ides&#8221; of that month. The day before a month&#8217;s &#8220;ides&#8221; day is called &#8220;the day before the ides&#8221;, two days before a month&#8217;s &#8220;ides&#8221; day can be called &#8220;two days before the ides&#8221;, and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Snooping around the Web some more, I learned that <a target=\"astrology\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zaytsev.com\/Devore\/i.html\">astrologists<\/a> also care about the ides.<\/p>\n<p>So now I am wondering whether we should be careful about May 15, July 15, and October 15, too.<\/p>\n<p>That is what I get for being inquisitive!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I saw this morning that today was March 15, I thought of the statement &#8220;Beware the ides of March.&#8221; This statement, which refers to the 15th of March, is from a soothsayer in Shakespeare&#8217;s play Julius Caesar.
