{"id":552,"date":"2009-03-23T12:00:46","date_gmt":"2009-03-23T18:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/an-apostrophe-to-the-rescue\/"},"modified":"2015-03-31T15:16:00","modified_gmt":"2015-03-31T21:16:00","slug":"an-apostrophe-to-the-rescue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2009\/03\/an-apostrophe-to-the-rescue\/","title":{"rendered":"An apostrophe to the rescue!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few years ago I noticed something odd about the television ads, billboards, and signs for the Church&#8217;s Chicken restaurant chain.<\/p>\n<p>The logo read &#8220;Churchs Chicken&#8221; without the required possessive apostrophe between the name &#8220;Church&#8221; and the letter &#8220;s&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an example of the apostrophe-less logo used by Church&#8217;s Chicken up until just a few years ago:<\/p>\n<p>The absence of the apostrophe bugged me but also made me wonder whether the company was omitting the apostrophe for some sort of branding or legal reason.<\/p>\n<p>For example, many trademark experts recommend against using possessives in brand names &#8212; and definitely against using a brand name (such as &#8220;Kodak&#8221;) as a possessive noun (such as &#8220;Kodak&#8217;s&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Well the folks at Church&#8217;s Chicken apparently realized that the apostrophe-less logo was actually a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>For example, here is an older logo that I found for Church&#8217;s Chicken:<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, <strong>the older logo did have the apostrophe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And here is how the Church&#8217;s Chicken logo appears at this writing &#8212; again <em>with<\/em> the possessive apostrophe:<\/p>\n<p>So the restaurant chain had the possessive apostrophe, dropped it (for who knows why), and re-added it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thank you, Church&#8217;s Chicken, for saving the apostrophe!<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few years ago I noticed something odd about the television ads, billboards, and signs for the Church&#8217;s Chicken restaurant chain.
