{"id":598,"date":"2009-05-08T12:00:38","date_gmt":"2009-05-08T18:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/blog\/2009\/05\/why-do-people-say-shavez-for-venezuelas-president\/"},"modified":"2015-12-10T13:33:25","modified_gmt":"2015-12-10T19:33:25","slug":"why-do-people-say-shavez-for-venezuelas-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2009\/05\/why-do-people-say-shavez-for-venezuelas-president\/","title":{"rendered":"Why do people say &#8220;Shavez&#8221; for Venezuela&#8217;s president?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The notorious <a target=\"_HC\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hugo_Ch%C3%A1vez\">Hugo Ch&aacute;vez<\/a> has been president of Venezuela, a Spanish-speaking country, since 1999.<\/p>\n<p>I believe that many Americans ten years later still pronounce the &#8220;H&#8221; in his first name, even though the letter &#8220;h&#8221; in Spanish is silent, because of their ignorance about this aspect of the Spanish language.<\/p>\n<p>Aggravating that ignorance, perhaps, is the fact that the name &#8220;Hugo&#8221; in American speech is often pronounced with a hard &#8220;H&#8221; &#8212; as when meteorologists repeatedly referred in 1989 to <a target=\"_HH\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hurricane_Hugo\">Hurricane Hugo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What puzzles me more is the pronunciation of the C-H in his surname as if it were spelled S-H instead.<\/p>\n<p>Many Americans know that they should pronounce the C-H in the Spanish words &#8220;chico&#8221; and &#8220;chihuahua&#8221; just as they pronounce the C-H in &#8220;church&#8221; and &#8220;chapel&#8221; and other English words.<\/p>\n<p>But somehow they get thrown by the C-H in Ch&aacute;vez and end up pronouncing the name as if it were Sh&aacute;vez &#8212; with an S-H &#8212; instead.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the confusion comes from the S-H pronunciation of the beginnings of the surnames of such French personalities as <a target=\"_Chagall\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chagall\">Marc Chagall<\/a> and <a target=\"_Chevalier\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maurice_Chevalier\">Maurice Chevalier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Given the strong influence of French on the English language, this could explain the mispronunciation of Ch&aacute;vez as Sh&aacute;vez.<\/p>\n<p>Another explanation is consistent with my &#8220;Devolution toward Simpler&#8221; linguistic hypothesis: It is simpler to pronounce the &#8220;soft&#8221; S-H found in words such as &#8220;shoot&#8221; and &#8220;shout&#8221; than it is to pronounce the &#8220;hard&#8221; C-H found in words such as &#8220;chore&#8221; and &#8220;chow&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think? <a target=\"_contact\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/contact\/\">Let me know!<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The notorious Hugo Ch&aacute;vez has been president of Venezuela, a Spanish-speaking country, since 1999.
