{"id":746,"date":"2013-07-29T12:00:50","date_gmt":"2013-07-29T18:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/?p=746"},"modified":"2013-07-29T12:01:07","modified_gmt":"2013-07-29T18:01:07","slug":"jane-taught-mary-to-see-herherself-as-a-victim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kirkmahoney.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2013\/07\/jane-taught-mary-to-see-herherself-as-a-victim\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Jane taught Mary to see [her|herself] as a victim.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many people use &#8220;myself&#8221; when they should use &#8220;me&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>For example, they might say to someone else, &#8220;Please send it to myself.&#8221; (even though &#8220;Please send it to me.&#8221; is the correct form).<\/p>\n<p>I love examples that will teach how the &#8220;self&#8221; pronouns are NOT interchangeable with the non-&#8220;self&#8221; pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>Here is one such example.<\/p>\n<p>Think about these two sentences:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>&#8220;Jane taught Mary to see herself as a victim.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Jane taught Mary to see her as a victim.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Jane taught Mary something in each sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Given that the object of &#8220;to see&#8221; in both sentences is a female pronoun &#8212; &#8220;herself&#8221; or &#8220;her&#8221; &#8212; we know that Jane taught Mary about seeing a female.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What female is being seen as a victim in sentence #1?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The phrase &#8220;taught Mary to see herself&#8221; in sentence #1 tells us that Mary is seeing <strong>Mary<\/strong> as a victim.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is the female to which &#8220;her&#8221; refers in sentence #2?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are two possible right answers and one wrong answer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The wrong  answer is Mary.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Without &#8220;herself&#8221; in &#8220;taught Mary to see ___ as a victim&#8221;, there is no implication of reflexivity for Mary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The two possible right answers are Jane and a third female.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jane taught Mary to see her as a victim.&#8221; as a standalone sentence implies that Jane taught Mary to see Jane as a victim. We have no context for a third female, so we must conclude that Mary sees <strong>Jane<\/strong> as the victim.<\/p>\n<p>If &#8220;Jane and Mary were discussing Sue.&#8221; immediately preceded &#8220;Jane taught Mary to see her as a victim.&#8221;, then the correct answer regarding &#8220;her&#8221; would be that Jane taught Mary to see <strong>Sue<\/strong> as a victim.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many people use &#8220;myself&#8221; when they should use &#8220;me&#8221;.
